Celebrating Halloween as an adult has certainly a different flavor than it did as a child. I remember growing up, we would use pillow cases to collect candy and then we’d go home, dump it all over the floor and sort what we liked and what we didn’t like. Then my dad would say, “Oh you can’t have this it’s not good… and eat it.” My brother and I would look at him and say, “Hey”. My dad would always have a clever excuse to eat our candy. But in the end, my parents, brother and I would sit around and laugh and joke about the Halloween fun we had.
I also remember our house being the scariest on the block. My mom would go all out to make our house look like a haunted house and she did an amazing job at it. She would always dress up and scare the neighbors and even scare us when we returned home after collecting our candy. We always had such great memories. One thing I don’t remember is having to worry about safety. In today’s world, safety needs to be on everyone’s mind.
Safety First!
Here are a few tried and true tips for staying safe this Halloween:
*Never enter a stranger’s home, always collect candy outside at the front door.
*When crossing the street be sure to look both ways and find a light corner to cross on.
*Be sure to stay in well-lit areas to avoid any trouble.
*Once you have your candy be sure to discard any that might be open (no matter how good it might be) and as a parent check the candy and make sure it is safe for your children to eat.
*Stay with a group! Keep close to your and family and don’t run ahead of the group.
*Parents this one is for you, be sure that you are alert with the kids. I know the fun you might be having too but be sure you’re not distracted and are keeping an eye on the kids, especially at a house you don’t know.
Now that we got the safety out of the way! Go and have fun! Oh and don’t forget to say Trick or Treat! I know most kinds think it’s not cool but the tag line makes the holiday!
